Worth the Weight in Gold?

Transcending race, religion, and other human constraints, Gold is one common denominator that has survived the test of time and repetitively proved its mettle.
An eternal symbol of beauty and sophistication. Be it jewellery, idols, monuments, or embellishments, this precious metal is worshipped in all walks of civilization.
Its seductive allure has played a significant role throughout the history of mankind. It screams status and power.

Between the 1st and 17th centuries AD, India was a thriving economy controlling one-third of the world’s wealth. We were always a maritime trading nation. Be it the gold coins from the Roman empire, the Venetian gold ductus, the Portuguese currency or Napoleon’s gold coins thus making us the custodian of the world’s bullion in our vaults.
We are a country fascinated with Gold. A simple Google search reveals Indian households may have stocked up to 25,000 tonnes of gold! If we go back to the beginning of time, as we know, Lord Brahma was born from gold. It is believed that the creator dropped a seed into the water when the world was still dark and lifeless. This seed turned into a radiant golden egg the ‘Hiranya Garbha’ (Sacred Womb) said to mirror the brightness of the sun itself.
We see that Gold plays a significant role in our mythology. Be it the golden plough used when Queen Sita was discovered or the golden city of Lanka. The Mahabharata itself is referred to as the Pipilika gold (ants’ gold)
The era of the Rajas & Maharajas is long gone but Gold still symbolizes Immortality, Ambition & Adaptability. We worship gold for purity and divinity pan India from the Golden Temple, Amritsar to the Padmanabha Temple, Kerala.
